Conservation
Musky Conservation in Northern Minnesota
My Commitment to Minnesota’s Musky Future
As a professional musky guide in Northern Minnesota, I believe conservation is at the heart of responsible fishing. Every trip I lead follows the Minnesota DNR’s best practices to protect our musky population. My goal isn’t just to help you catch fish — it’s to make sure every musky we encounter swims away strong and healthy for the next generation of anglers.
My Guiding Philosophy: Catch, Respect, Release
Over the years, I’ve learned that being a great angler means being a great steward of the resource. My guiding philosophy is simple — catch the fish, respect the fish, release the fish. I teach every client proper handling techniques and emphasize ethical angling practices that support sustainable musky fishing in Minnesota. Each trip is a hands-on lesson in respect — for the fish, the water, and the wild places that make Minnesota musky fishing world-class.
Practicing DNR-Approved Catch and Release
When we land a trophy musky, the work isn’t over — it’s just beginning. Following Minnesota DNR catch-and-release guidelines, I make sure every musky is handled with care and released safely. My approach includes:
- Using barbless hooks to reduce injury
- Keeping fish in the water as much as possible
- Supporting the fish horizontally to prevent damage
- Ensuring full recovery before letting it go
These methods protect the fish’s health and contribute to long-term musky conservation across Northern Minnesota’s lakes and rivers.
Why Conservation Matters to Me
Guiding for me isn’t just a job — it’s a way to give back to the resource that’s given me so much. I’ve spent years fishing the pristine waters of Northern Minnesota, and I’ve seen firsthand how proper conservation makes the difference between a thriving fishery and a declining one. Every released musky is an investment in the future — for our ecosystem, for the sport, and for those who will chase these apex predators long after we’re gone.
